Assessor Workshops

Role of Assessor
The core task is to verify the self assessment form that the school Cycling Champion submits to them and complete their section of the form. The assessor will do this by arranging a site visit with the school and going through the criteria with the Champion. Assessors can also encourage schools to make the most of the positive publicity that gaining the award can generate by letting local press know about the presentation and getting a local Councillor or similar involved.

Award Roll-out
The majority of packs have been sent to the School Travel Co-ordinator in each Local Authority area to then distribute to their primary schools. The purpose of this approach was to provide schools with a context for receiving the pack. The benefit to the School Travel Co-ordinator is that they are kept in the loop in regards to active travel promotion activities being undertaken in each of their schools as well as to provide the opportunity to build relationships with the schools and work with them to achieve the award.

Partnership Working
Working in partnership with the various organisations involved with cycling in Primary schools is an integral part of the award scheme.
The Active School Co-ordinator and Road Safety Officer networks will also be offered the opportunity to act as assessors so that each are fully equipped to carry out an assessment confidently and are aware of how to access further information. All networks are encouraged to liaise with the School Travel Co-ordinator if they will be the individual supporting the school and existing partnership working can be utilised at local level to complete assessments.
The purpose of this workshop is to orientate volunteer assessors and enable them to carry out an assessment. The Award itself is intended to encourage schools and give them practical guidance on how to achieve a school environment conducive to cycling. The assessor can have an active role in helping the school to achieve this goal.

In order for the CFS award to be sustainable it is important to build capacity throughout Scotland for promotion, assessment and support of the award scheme with each of the networks. Support will be offered and facilitated to ASC’s and STC’s by Cycling Scotland and Sustrans through the delivery of orientation workshops.
