Welcome to Cycling Scotland

Cycle Skills Trainer

By the end of this training course candidate instructors will be aware of the skills required to deliver card based sessions to both children and adults in an off-road cycling environment such as a playground or sports area.

For children of 4-10 yrs, the main level of delivery will be FUNdamental cycle control skills. Using a 10-card session plan resource, Ready, Steady, Bike .
Delivery of this programme could be viewed as essential,  if we are to give children the necessary skills to be able to control their bicycle safely and enjoyably, this provides the foundation for them to go on to cycle training.

The FUNdamental cycle control skills programme is also extremely relevant for adults who may have missed out on cycling as a child or for adults with special needs. As a cycle skills trainer you would learn how to work effectively with a wide range of ages and abilities.
The Course will cover the following topics:-

• FUNdamental cycle control skills
• Communication skills
• Group organisation/Control Health and Safety Guidelines
• Monitoring and reviewing progress with trainees

This is very much a practical course and the trainee will be given plenty of opportunity to practice the required skills. The trainee will be required to demonstrate competence in the following :

• Lesson planning
• Communicating with children
• Delivering to a group
• Identifying and correcting errors
This will be done by continuous assessment throughout the course.

Pre-requisite: Applicants for this course should have an interest in cycling and in cycle training/delivery. Applicants should also be competent cyclists.
