Liz McColgan backs Pedal for Scotland
Liz McColgan backs Scotland’s largest mass participation bike ride
One of Scotland’s top Olympic athletes, former 10,000m world champion Liz McColgan is swapping her running shoes for a pair of bicycle clips, to show her support for Scotland’s largest mass-participation charity cycle ride, Pedal for Scotland.
Returning on 27 August 2006 for its eighth year, the Pedal for Scotland event is becoming one of Scotland’s major outdoor events, with participation growing substantially each year. Last year, the number of riders swelled to over 1600, a 50% increase on the previous year. Every possible effort is being made to match that level of increase for this year’s event, as we aim to stage the biggest and best Pedal for Scotland ever.
Supported by new charity partner Leukaemia Research, the UK’s leading blood cancer charity, the event is now becoming so popular even sporting celebrities are getting in on the act. Champion runner Liz McColgan who is a Patron of the charity said: “I’ve been involved with Leukaemia Research for a number of years now, so when I heard they were getting involved in Pedal for Scotland, I really wanted to lend my support. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday than cycling across Scotland, especially when it raises much needed funds for such a worthwhile charity”.
Liz was inspired to become patron of the charity because her husband's younger brother died of the disease aged five.
Pedal for Scotland is organised by Cycling Scotland, the Scottish Executive funded body set up to get the nation cycling its way to a fitter and more sustainable future. Cycling Scotland's Chief Executive Erl Wilkie said: "We're delighted that Liz McColgan will be taking part in Pedal for Scotland this year and it is testament to the event's growing popularity. People are always surprised when training and taking part in the ride by how easy it can be to travel long distances by cycling. One day's pedalling can make long lasting lifestyle changes and we hope to see more of those than ever this year."
