RESIDENTS certainly decided to ‘Go Barrhead’ last week after gearing up for a challenging cycle around the town.
Almost 30 locals turned out at the ARC last week complete with bikes, helmets, and bundles of determination as they prepared to participate in a very special community bike ride.
The annual cycle aims to try and encourage residents to take up a new form of fitness and to explore their surroundings in a way they’ve never done before.
Heaps of keen riders turned out for the challenge, guided around the trails by instructors from Cycle Scotland.
They loved it so much they’re keen to come back next year and tackle a different patch of land.
Local lady Janet Campbell joined Auchenback Women’s Group and some of their children as they cycled round Balgray Reservoir as part of the initiative.
Guided by the team of professionals, they enjoyed riding around in the sun and exploring the top end of Barrhead.
She added: “Everyone had a really good time in the capable hands of the two gentlemen from Bike Shed and Christine from Go Barrhead.”
Almost everywhere in the town can be reached in 30 minutes of walking – and even less time cycling.
There are lots of trails and tracks to try – most of which can be done by inexperienced athletes.
One of the project’s organisers, Christina Lindsay, said: “It’s a great event and we were really keen to encourage people to get involved.
“It’s suitable for all ages and all abilities and we were hoping for around 25 people so the turnout was good.
“This kind of event encourages people to make more walking and cycling trips around the town.”
