Scotland’s biggest bike ride
freshnlo Pedal for Scotland is Scotland’s biggest bike ride. Having started in 1999 as a small Glasgow to Edinburgh bike ride, the event has now grown into one of the biggest participation events in Scotland. Over 14,000 riders took part in 2011, and the ride now offers participants a choice of rides so cyclists of all ages and abilities can take part.

freshnlo Pedal for Scotland 2011
Taking place on September 11th, Scotland’s biggest bike ride, returned for 2011 with an additional three new rides.
• The classic freshnlo Pedal for Scotland challenge ride is a 47 mile ride between Glasgow and Edinburgh
• The brand new freshnlo Pedal for Scotland Sportive - a 94 mile timed ride through the Southern Uplands, taking a longer route between Glasgow and Edinburgh for a serious challenge
• The freshnlo Pedal for Scotland 9 mile Edinburgh Family Ride - a brand new FREE event for families with young children and those new to cycling, with a traffic free off-road route from Kirkliston to Murrayfield Stadium with a host of music, entertainment and activities.
• The freshnlo Pedal for Scotland SKY Ride – For newcomers to cycling or families with younger children, the Sky Ride offered an amazing traffic free city ride in Glasgow that allows you to see the sights but avoid the cars and buses. Best of all, entry was absolutely free.
These three new rides, in addition to the classic 47 Mile Challenge Ride attracted over 14,000 riders.
Awards
freshnlo Pedal for Scotland has won a number of industry awards in recent years. The event was awarded Best Sports Event and the Event Management Grand Prix at the Scottish Event Awards in 2009, and won Best Sports Event, Best Event in an Outdoor Space and the Event Management Grand Prix in 2010 Scottish Event Awards. The event was also awarded the Gold Award for Event Excellence at the Marketing Society Star Awards and the Gold Award for Best SME Marketing. This year we were awarded Best Use of Sponsorship at the Scottish Event Awards and the Marketing Society Star Awards 2011.
freshnlo Pedal for Scotland now offers a cycling event for any level of ability – from newcomers to serious road cyclists to make the event as inclusive as possible. The event supports charity partner Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres, which raised over £300,000 from the 2010 event.
Event organiser Andrew Pankhurst, of national cycling promotion organisation Cycling Scotland commented: “freshnlo Pedal for Scotland has always presented a great challenge for people who want a healthy and active day out with friends, family or workmates, however Cycling Scotland want to involve cyclists of all ages and abilities which is why we’re introducing two new rides. We hope to encourage the broadest range of people possible to be part of Scotland’s biggest bike ride and hope everyone, from seasoned road riders through to those who just taken off their stabilisers to get involved, and show that cycling is the best way to travel.”
There are regular rest stops, free snacks and entertainment along the route making it the perfect way to enjoy the countryside, stay fit and have fun. freshnlo Pedal for Scotland is organised by Cycling Scotland.
