Routes and Mapping
Planning a route is a vital part of starting cycling to school. A common misconception people make when thinking about cycling to school is that they would take the same route as they would in the car, and this may be unsafe because of busy traffic. However, by planning a route on quiet backroads and off-road cycle paths you can devise a route that is safe, pleasant to cycle on and is still quick and effiicient.

Edinburgh
Good local cycle mapping has been produced for Edinburgh for the city council, and is an excellent resource for planning a journey to school. Maps are available in paper form from the council, or you can download PDFs of the maps below. If the maps are slow to open, try right clicking over the links and selecting 'Save Target As..' and save the file to your hard drive, then opening it.
