Welcome to Cycling Scotland

The shirt off your back

During 2007 Brian Curtis was planning a tour for CTC Cycling Holidays to the Cape area of South Africa. This was to be Brian’s 7th and last tour to Cape Town and he was keen to give some support to the cycle charity Bicycle Empowerment Network (BEN) that he had come into contact with and supported on earlier tours.

BEN exists to promote low cost non-motorised transport to give benefit to all and it aims to achieve this through bicycle workshop projects while working in partnership with the South African government and many international partners. Brian made an appeal to all Scottish ctc members through their CycleTalk Newsletter to donate some cycle clothing that he would take over in February 2008 at the start of the ctc tour. The response he got was overwhelming, well over one hundred cycle shirts plus many shorts and other items were being delivered to Brian from all over Scotland. There were many words of encouragement for BEN from the donors and a huge range of varied clothing to take to Cape Town. At the end of a ctc tour it is customary to hold a dinner and it was at this end of tour dinner at the Cape Town Hollow Hotel that the presentation of the cycling clothing was made to Andrew Wheeldon, the managing director of BEN, and Phil Liggett, a patron of BEN and former president of the ctc. In addition to the clothing Brian also donated his bike and the ctc tour members conducted an auction that raised over 1200 Rand for the BEN funds.

Brian Curtis said “Over the years over 200 ctc riders have enjoyed the cycling facilities in South Africa and I am pleased to be able to pass on these shirts from the ctc members in Scotland plus the donations from the tour group in recognition of the pleasure that so many have had cycling here”
Andrew Wheeldon said “These items will be distributed to riders associated with our cycle projects and they will be encouraged to take a more active role through wearing properly designed cycle clothing”.

Phil Liggett said “I have always been amazed at the generosity found in the cycling world, this effort from the Scottish cyclists and the touring group proves once again the truth of this belief”
