Adventure Aberdeen – Go MTB

As a council service adventure aberdeen has strongly promoted the take-up of Go-Mountain Bike as a means for the young people of our city to gain the skills necessary to get out and independently enjoy the surrounding outdoor spaces. We have been particularly pleased with the participation rates within deprivation areas. In my opinion parents see the scheme as offering value for money, structured training and valuable life skills. Teachers also appreciate the close links to Curriculum for Excellence as well as the knock-on benefits of increased well-being and sustainable travel to school. We have been very lucky to be supported in the delivery of Go-MTB by EnQuest who have significantly contributed to the costs of a primary bike fleet and ongoing twilight training through their community investment programme. The future for Go-MTB in Aberdeen has recently been strengthened by a multi-agency partnership between ourselves, EnQuest, Active Schools, Torry Rotary Club and the primary schools within the Torry catchment area. The plan being to create a self-supporting voluntary mountain biking club focused and structured by the delivery of Go-MTB. Ultimately, we as tutors have had great fun delivering Go-MTB and it has forced us to improve our biking props, games, coaching and personal skills!

My big recommendation to anyone wanting to deliver Go-MTB to a large volume of participants is - learn to use the online resources! The kids love to track their progress online and it lets parents see what is going on too. Once participant data is entered into the Cycling Scotland website it becomes an almost paperless system. As our council service becomes increasingly web-based I prefer not having to keep Go-MTB participant info on scraps of paper, or having to submit returns by post. The less clutter the better. I would thoroughly recommend Go-MTB to anyone wanting a rewarding, structured base to get kids riding bikes on the rough stuff. GO for it!
